On an average annual basis, The Orpheum has presented more Broadway touring productions than any other theater in the country. In addition to bringing the finest Broadway Productions to the area, a wide array of entertainers have graced the Orpheum’s stage including Cary Grant, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Kenny G, Chuck Mangione, Stacy Keach, Patti LaBelle, Robert Goulet, Dorothy Hamill, Harry Connick, Jr., Tom Jones and the Vienna Choir Boys to name a few.

Two of Memphis’ local arts groups, Ballet Memphis and Opera Memphis, also call The Orpheum home.

The FedEx St. Jude Classic has been played in Memphis since 1958 making it the longest running golf tournament on the PGA. The tournament is played at TPC Southwind and benefits the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In 2011, the total purse was $5,600,000 with $1,008,000 going to Harrison Frazar who came in first with -13 par.

Early player commitments include defending champion Harrison Frazar, two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen, local favorite John Daly, Tennesseans Brandt Snedeker and Scott Stallings, plus Johnson Wagner, Fredrick Jacobsen and Robert Karlsson, FESJC runner-up for the past two years.

The 2012 tournament will prove to be their biggest and best ever. In honor of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s 50th anniversary, several events have been added. On Wednesday, June 6, at TCP Southwind, stars from the world of sports and entertainment have been invited to play. Celebrities including TV actors Rob Morrow, Alan Thicke, Dave Annable, and Brian Baumgartner; sports personalities including Justin Fuente, Penny Hardaway, Rick Barry, Greg Anthony, Tim Brando, Joe Theismann and country music artist Clay Walker will be in attendance. There will be a Saturday night concert featuring Super T and the Tyrone Smith Revue and a Kids Zone near the 10th tee.

Memphis In May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest

Hundreds of teams make their way to the banks of the Mississippi River to compete for over $100,000 in prizes and bragging rights in the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest.

Sure, it is a contest, but it is also a swine soiree. The smell of sweet, smoky barbecue is only one of the sensory enjoyments. Each grilling booth will be decked out with all types of pig embellishments; including their team names: Slab Yo Mama, Swine & Dine or The Best Little Boardhouse in Memphis to name a few. You can expect to see grill masters donning snouts, hooves, pig ears and wigs as they gear up for the annual Ms. Piggie contest where not only their costumes will be judged but their vocal talents as well.

Although local health regulations prohibit teams from serving barbecue to the general public, you can pig-out on some of Memphis’ best barbecue offered by other food vendors at the festival. Make your plans to attend this Super Bowl of Swine this May.
